a new (and delightful) volunteer op

I got a number of cool suggestions about where I should volunteer. And, after making some inquiries, I have gone in a totally different direction.
A web resource that I love to use is the Worldwide Labyrinth Locator. I know I've posted about it here before. I sent an email to the Labyrinth Society webmaster, and asked if they could use some help in keeping the WorldWide Labyrinth Locator current for the US. He said, absolutely! They're based in the UK, so it's probably pretty difficult for them to do that sort of thing themselves. He said that I should just email him with whatever information I have, and he will make the changes. Apparently, they're also planning to roll out a new database which will make it easier to update.
So, this morning, I copy-and-pasted all of the listings for Massachusetts into a Word file, and started calling around. The main problem seems to be getting the right person on the phone - everyone has been very friendly and willing to help so far. I got to speak with the art teacher who designed the Peace Labyrinth in Danvers, which is a favorite of mine, and the Sister who built a labyrinth in Dighton, Massachusetts.
I'm excited about this for a lot of reasons. One is that I love contributing time or money to things that I actually use personally. I like to give something back, especially if it's officially free. Another is that it's really cool to talk to the people involved in these projects. A third is that it makes me feel inspired to spend more time visiting labyrinths I haven't seen before. Neat-o!
I'm planning to check the listings for all the labyrinths in Massachusetts - about 40 that they know of. I'm also planning to scout around and see if I can find any more for inclusion. Then, I will see if I feel like going further. But, even if I only do Massachusetts, that will be a valuable service for the group, I think.
Leave a comment if you're interested in hearing more about this project.

They're open all the time. They're next to a Marian shrine. Very nice. Let me know how you enjoy it.

Date: 2006-10-06 02:41 am (UTC)I was at a woman's group this evening in East Greenwich (RI) and one of the ladies just got back from Glastonbury, so she was talking a bit about labyrinths. I need to walk some.
Good luck with the volunteering! I'd love to hear more...I do still visit LJ...I've just been crazy-busy. Fall does that to me. :-)
