more craftiness
Feb. 9th, 2005 03:58 pmSo, in my last crafty post, I didn't tell you all about my new projects.
This is especially relevant because I finished the tea cozy, the muff, and the mittens I was working on. (Pictures will be forthcoming.)
I have started the shawl that I'm making for
bryghtrose, in hopes of finishing it before she moves out. It's a pattern from the slipstitch crochet book I mentioned here a while ago. The colors are warm brown and pumpkin - perfect for her. Even though they're not my colors, I like them, and that's a plus too.
I also bought yarn for the "Letter Have It" bag pattern in the new SNB. It's a bulky rather than the worsted the pattern calls for - bulky was where they had the color I wanted (a nice bright pink, which I'm sure is a big surprise to all of you). I'm thinking about just making the pattern as it stands with the larger yarn. I don't mind the bag being a bit on the big side - I like big bags - and I like long handles, too. My one question is - how do I choose the right size needles? The pattern calls for worsted, but is knitted on elevens (normally you would use eights). Do I go up three needle sizes and buy fourteens, or is there a more complicated process I should use to make it come out right?
Finally, I was completely enchanted by this pattern: http://www.crochetme.com/Feb_Mar_2005/patt_fleuri.html
I guess I just have a thing about girly bags recently. Anyway, I got some gorgeous burgundy super-chunky to make it with, and I think it's going to be awesome. I may not use acrylic handles. I'm not a big fan of them. Perhaps bamboo instead.

Date: 2005-02-09 09:58 pm (UTC)Windsor Button near Park Street (where I went this time)
Webs in Northampton (discount yarn! but obviously it's a bit of a hike, and so large as to be overwhelming)
The Fabric Place in the Woburn Mall (great selection, varied price range)
Woolcott's in Harvard Square (mostly pricier yarns, super-helpful staff, good selection of books)
Mind's Eye Yarns in Porter Square (small selection, very friendly staff, range of prices)
Windsor Button is the best place to get cheap yarn that's close by, in my opinion at least. They have a good selection of colors and styles of Lion's Brand, Red Heart, Lamb's Pride, etc. They also have a LOT of books and patterns that other places don't have.
