Mistress Matisse, whose writing I really like, posted this in response to a letter from a reader.

I found it interesting. I'm part of a group called madfemmepride, which I recommend to anyone that might be inclined to join it - it really is mad friendly, just as advertised. We've had some discussions about what it means to be femme, and MM's post reminded me of those - perspectives on femme that had never occurred to me. (For instance, it has never occurred to me to think that straight women shouldn't be able to claim femme identity. I think it can still be meaningful and respectful.) As I was commenting in my previous post on femme identity, I think the crucial element is of choice, but not everybody sees it that way.

What do you like about polyamory? Why is it a good choice for you?

This is a well-phrased question, for sure. My first instinct was to answer with the ways that monogamy doesn't work for me, but that's not really what you're asking.

This is your last chance to ask me a question month question. Tomorrow I will be closing the "question box" and taking a break for a few days. Until then, go here.

The Mage's Daughter is the sequel to Star of the Morning, Kurland's first Nine Kingdoms novel. It picks up immediately after the end of the first book. Morgan the mercenary's past is coming back to haunt her. Every man she meets wants something different from her. She is struggling to come to terms with her previously unknown abilities and to find her own way.

A quote. )

This book is well-written and very hard to put down. Like the previous book, it leaves you with many unanswered questions. I look forward to seeing them resolved in the third book, whenever it might come out. I think Kurland has been successful in her branching out from the world of romance into fantasy. Her heroine has guts and brains, even though her love interest seems to have a hard time not acting like a jerk. The plot is a bit predictable, but there are some intriguing twists along the way. The inner lives of the characters are very believable, and the dialogue is fun. If you like romantic fantasy, or fantasy with strong female characters, or romance, then you should like this too. Four stars.

(Her first published foray into this world was the novella "The Tale of Two Swords," in the anthology To Weave a Web of Magic. However, you don't have to read that in order to enjoy Star of the Morning and this lovely sequel.)
