Okay, I'm starting the Too Cranky To Live Club. Who wants to join?

In addition to members, we are also accepting supplicants, who can bring us drinks, fix our laptops, and update our resumes.

Speaking of which -

Dear LJ Genie,

My laptop's mouse seems to be frozen. I have restarted it several times. I'm not sure what else to do, and being unable to move the mouse, and unable to remember the commands to select icons and open menus, I don't know how to fix it. Any suggestions?

Also, I need to import a picture into a word document. Any tips on that?

Hugs and Kisses,

Honey

Dear TCTL -

I can't help you with either of your problems, but I would sincerely like to join your club.

I fear my quallifications may be lacking. Might one join if their only ailment is a broken heart?

sincerely,

Just a Little Numb

Awww. Yes, a broken heart sure qualifies.

*hugs* If you need anything that a very cranky girl can provide, let me know.

Argh! I'd say "I'd love to join!", but I'm too cranky to love to do anything. Bring on the supplicants. Bonus points for any supplicant who can make a fine ginger lemonade.

Is the mouse a button or pad that is part of the laptop, or does it plug in somewhere? if it plugs in, check the connector to make sure all the pins are present, or try another mouse if you have an extra one.
In word, you can choose "picture" from the insert menu, then choose what type of picture you want to insert. I believe you can also have a picture in another program, such as internet explorer, and right click to copy, then paste in word.

It's a pad, not a plug-in. I know all about the unplugging and replugging, and even opening up the little circle on the bottom to wash the sphere in cases of dire need. But this is my first laptop ever and I'm feeling a bit clueless.

Thanks for the Word hints. New roommate flyer, here we come!

You can almost certainly plug a regular mouse into it. If that works, it might help you figure out what's wrong with your touchpad, and will surely help you do any mousing you need to do to do the other things you need to do.

(And if it doesn't work, it's another data point for when you call the support folks. Good luck.)

Thanks for the suggestion. I plugged in a different mouse on the laptop, and it still didn't work. Unfortunately, I don't think there are support folks to call in this case - [livejournal.com profile] mrpet got it from ebay... so, I guess I'll just have to wait until he gets home.

You might be able to download a new driver from the manufacturer's website. Also, computers get cranky when they get too hot, so you might try moving it closer to the AC. When you restarted, have you just chosen "restart" from the start menu, or have you chosen "shut down," left it alone for a bit, then started? Sometimes a cold restart can help.
If you have a mouse lying around that can connect to your laptop (usb connector, or your laptop has an older mouse hook-up) try turning the computer off, plugging in the mouse, then turning it back on.
Worst comes to worst, your friends this weekend can try to out-nerd each other in your service.

Yup, a driver might help - but how can I download it with no mouse? I know there are commands to do things without using a mouse but I don't know what they are. Is there a list somewhere?

I have turned it off, left it alone for a bit, and restarted it.

I tried the mouse alternate, but apparently it wasn't The Thing. It still didn't work.

Thanks for all your suggestions.

Too bad I blew my laptop up a few months ago trying to fix it myself.

I'm not sure. You look familiar, but according to your journal, you've never visited the East Coast. And I've never visited the West Coast. Where do you think we know each other from?
