So, yesterday while I was helping my sister move, I noticed that her roomate had Mercedes Lackey's new book Sanctuary. I asked how it was, and she lent it to me. I read it today - finished it this morning in bed.
It was the wrap-up to the trilogy with dragons. There were some things I liked about it, and some I didn't. I really like the way that dragons are never portrayed as being as smart as humans (or smarter). They don't talk, they're not magical, they're basically large flying lizards. Rock the fuck on - do you have any idea of how sick fandom is of talking dragons?
Moving on. :) Some of the plot twists, I thought, were just a bit too convenient. There was one that I thought was pretty unbelievable, as in "They pulled out that tired old line?" The way gender relations were discussed was also a bit stereotyped. "The woman I love wants to do dangerous important things! I wanted to protect her by keeping her from doing them, but now I realize that isn't right." I have to wonder if that's some sort of an issue for Lackey. Anyway, it was good fluff. Around the same level of quality as the earlier Elemental Masters books (The Fire Rose, The Serpent's Shadow.) Good fluff.
Also, Freeform Knitting and Crochet finally came in for me at the library. That made me happy. I have leafed through the book, and I think I have a basic sense of the concepts. I loved it, thought it was great. I especially enjoyed the description of the Grow As You Go technique for making garments - completely hilarious and completely true.
I'm not sure how much I want to get into scrumbling. It seems to involve a lot of sewing pieces together, which is my least favorite part of the process. But the results look so neat! I'm thinking I'll try a small project and see how I like it.
