You know how people say, "I'm so mad, I could spit tacks"?

I have just come into a new understanding of that phrase.

This article explains how an Indiana judge ruled that pagan parents cannot teach their beliefs to their child.

I'm bringing a special icon out of retirement just for this post.
Don't make me get my flying monkeys, people.

At least the author of the article reporting it is clearly on the parents' side in this matter. I'm thrilled to see such a calm, unbiased, and informational reporting on a situation involving Wicca.

But, damn. The fact that there is no precedent for such a decision either in IN state or federal court cases means that this should get tossed out rather expediently.

You know, I thought the kooky rules-flinging judges were on *our* side. At least, that's what the Republicans think. Grrrrr.

This is beyond appalling, it's inexplicable. I can't help but think that there's some part of the story that hasn't been reported yet, because this is almost a parody of a First Amendment violation. Maybe the judge is secretly trying to help ACLU fundraising or something? Very strange stuff.

Sure. Hi! I wrote back, too (unless I'm confused about who you are).

Oh, right - I just got your additional message. Right then. :) Emailing back shortly.

-It's so blithely unconstitutional that I find it hard to get worked up about it. The parents have the ACLU actively on their side, and it's just a matter of an appeal or two.

(Getting the judge punished would be trickier, unfortunately.)

I wish I felt as confident as you do. In the current political climate, I'm afraid that anything is possible, and I do not mean that in a good way.

A friend of mine already emailed the story to me and I already posted it too. I agree with [livejournal.com profile] woodwardiocom; it's still absurd in our present constitutional incarnation. What worries me is that there are folks who want to change that constitution.
