A society of people who only consume is not sustainable, whether your framework is ethical, historical, ecological, or spiritual. Just for one day, show that you know it. Skip the crowds, skip the midnight madness, turn off the corporate messages that we need STUFF to feel loved. Take a 24-hour break from being a consumer. Make something yourself, whether it's a great scene in your novel, a painting, a holiday card, or just turkey curry. Volunteer. Hug someone you love. Take a walk.

Participate by not participating.

I've observed this for about a decade. Well, except for that time when a hot water heater burst and I had to get a new one. But I always enjoy the freedom and thoughtfulness it brings.

Yeah. It's neat to be doing it with more intentionality and knowing others are doing it too on purpose, at least for me.

Hmmm - does it count if I buy nothing because a) I hate shopping in massive crowds, and b) I have no money this year anyway?

(And that's not to dismiss the idea at all, because I'm working *every* day to lower my consumerism and live more sustainably. I just can't participate this year for noble reasons. :)

Sure, it counts! Just because noble reasons aren't your ONLY reasons does not invalidate them. :)
