Shades of Dark by Linnea Sinclair
Sep. 25th, 2009 08:29 amTitle: Shades of Dark
Author: Linnea Sinclair
Series: Dock 5 Universe #2
Genre: Romantic space opera.
Reason for Reading: Sinclair is my favorite writer of romantic sci fi. In her best moments she reminds me a bit of Lee and Miller.
Pages: 410
Copyright Date: 2008
Cover: Lots of red tones. A couple kissing - a woman in the center, and someone in the background who might be a guy. Spaceships are exploding in the foreground.
First line: "Third shift and I couldn't sleep."
Best part: I liked the attention to the political situation in this book.
Worst part: Chaz seems to have lost a lot of her assertiveness. She takes shit she shouldn't take.
Imaginary Theme Song: "A Better Man" by Pearl Jam
Grade: C
Recommended for: Those who've read the first book.
Related Reads: Gabriel's Ghost, the previous installment. Carpe Diem by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller. The Star King by Susan Grant.
I really enjoyed the first half of this book, but I didn't like where she went with the rest as much. Too much of the plot depended on Chaz not standing up for herself. However, I am happy to see that Hope's Folly, the next book in the series will focus on her ex-husband Philip Guthrie, who I think is an interesting character. (No, I don't have a daddy complex. Not me.)
