Freedom of speech.
Freedom of movement.
My savings.
Two very lovable cats.
A partner that supports me in my healing process.
Having invested ten years in that process. (Ten years!)
The freedom to have sex with anyone I want.
Friends that care about me.
A home with a roof that keeps out the rain.
All the books in the public library.

Libraries are not valued anywhere near as much as they deserve, in my opinion (present company excepted!)

I've often thought that if libraries hadn't existed before and someone tried to start one today, they'd be laughed out of court. "I have this great idea! We'll fill a big building with books and magazine and music and movies and software. There will be stuff for fun and stuff for work and stuff you only need to know on special occasions, and it'll all be right there, whenever you need it. Anybody can take out any of the books."

"But how will you get the books BACK?"

"Oh, that's easy, we'll make people promise to bring them back!"

*Person is laughed at by all and sundry, then locked up as a lunatic*

Libraries are one of the things that give me hope, when the dark side of human nature seems stronger than the light side.

This reminds me what [livejournal.com profile] mrpet says about bicycles - to wit, that if they were invented NOW they would never pass FDA approval.
