So, I enjoy reading aloud to my housegirl.

A few weeks ago, we finished The Blue Sword by Robin McKinley. It was really a wonderful book to read aloud, because it is so lyrical. Also, the chapters are pretty distinct, and the plot is not so complicated that you can't remember who is who when you pick it up a few weeks later.

I have been having some trouble deciding what to read next. I don't want to just read her everything Robin McKinley ever wrote. I want to expose her to a variety of books. I had thought I would do Song of the Lioness by Tamora Pierce next - but I started reading it aloud and found it very clunky. The language doesn't flow terribly well for oration. Does anyone have any suggestions? What are your favorite things to read aloud?

my initial thought is all the Weetzie Bat books. but then i figure you've already had her read them :)

perhaps some Barbara Kingsolver short stories? or Mercedes Lackey.

I recommend Meredith Ann Pierce's "Darkangel Trilogy," which I've mentioned to you. I read it to my sister last summer. I'd be happy to loan it to you.

i LOVED "Sorcery and Cecilia" and think you might too... it's by C.J. Stevermer and Patricia C. Wrede. also maybe try "Swordspoint" or "Thomas the Rhymer" by Ellen Kushner... "Winter Rose" by Patricia A McKillip... anything by Francesca Lia Block (i highly recommend "Nymph" which is sweetly erotic short stories)... that's a good start, i think. i should browse my bookshelves for more.
Tamara Pierce was kinda clunky reading, but they're fun books nevertheless.

I had the first three books of Leo Frankowski's Cross Time Engineer read to me to the tune of much enjoyment. The remaining four I read for myself, but it wasn't the same. (I can't guarantee I spelled the name correctly.)

i've found that the adventures of kavalier & clay by michael chibon flows very nicely when read aloud.

Susan Cooper's The Dark Is Rising Sequence is excellent YA fiction, one of my favorites. And I remember my mom reading aloud to me from Redwall, by Brian Jacques. It's the only non-picture book I can remember having read to me. His later books are fluffy (literally, even, his characters are mice) but the hero mouse in Redwall is quite excellent.
