Title: By Heresies Distressed
Author: David Weber
Series: Safehold #3
Genre: Science fiction
Reason for Reading: I liked the previous two books.
Pages: 475
Copyright Date: 2009
Cover: A man coming out of a spaceship, with an upraised sword! He's looking down at a castle in winter.
First line: "The snow outside the Temple was deep for October, even for the city of Zion, and more fell steadily, thickly, only to be whipped into mad swirls by the bitter wind roaring in off Lake Pei."
Best part: The book maintains an upbeat and interesting pace - it seemed shorter than it was.
Worst part: This is a tie. On the one hand, just how long is this series going to be? Weber's protagonist is nowhere near confronting the Church, which has to happen before they pull the planet's infrastructure up by its bootstraps, which has to happen before anyone can consider mounting a reasonable defense against the alien menace. On the other hand, Weber's cleverness with names is starting to get on my nerves. Narhmahn Baytz? Kynt Clareyk? Please.
Imaginary Theme Song: "Somebody's Watching Me" by Rockwell
Grade: C
Recommended for: Those who, like me, find it difficult to stop reading Weber's series.
Related Reads: Off Armageddon Reef (first in the series) and March Upcountry by the same author.
