Title: An Unsuitable Job for a Woman
Author: PD James
Series: Cordelia Gray #1
Genre: Mystery, PT, female sleuth
Pages: 250
Copyright Date: 1977
Cover: A woman stares with alarm at a hanging belt that has been looped into a noose. You can see a garden behind her, presumably through a window or door.
First line: "On the morning of Bernie Pryde's death -- or it may have been the morning after, since Bernie died as his own convenience, nor did he think the estimated time of his departure worth recording -- Cordelia was caught in a breakdown of the Bakerloo Line outside Lambeth North and was half an hour late at the office."
Best part: An engaging new heroine in an interesting time period (the late seventies - when the book was written, but that doesn't make it less interesting to me!).
Worst part: The shadow of her usual hero, Commander Dagliesh, is omnipresent in the book.
Imaginary Theme Song: "Just a Girl" - No Doubt
Grade: C+
Recommended for: Fans of female sleuths and the British countryside.
Related Reads: The Beekeeper's Apprentice by Laurie R King, A Fatal Waltz by Tasha Alexander.

Cordelia Gray has had what we might describe as an eclectic past. First she was raised in a convent, then spent some time following her anarchist father and his band of revolutionary friends. Once they wound up dead or in jail, she fell into some temporary work, which led her to the offices of a retired police detective. No longer is she a mere secretary, now he's teaching her the tools of his trade, making her a full partner! Follow the strange events of her first real case - the case that begins with his death.
