Title: Saffy's Angel
Series: Casson Family
Author: Hilary McKay
Genre: YA fiction
Pages: 152
Copyright Date: 2001
Cover: A painting - yellow in the background. A foreground of a building with ivy growing on it, and a green door in the center. A girl is standing in front of the door, her back to us.
First Line: "When Saffron was eight, and had at last learned to read, she hunted slowly through the color chart pinned up on the kitchen wall."
Best part: The progressive picking up of the pace throughout the book.
Worst part: Everyone seems to love the father, who is portrayed as being entirely unsympathetic - it baffled me.
Grade: B
Recommended for: Fans of YA fiction, fans of art, and fans of stories about zany houses and families.

When she is eight years old, Saffron, Saffy for short, finds out that she is different. This new knowledge follows her for years. When her grandfather dies, a mysterious entry in his will will start her on a quest that will be frightening, funny, moving, and silly all at once. Her brother and sisters - Indigo, Cadmium, and Rose - want to help, but they don't know what to do. Or do they?

This is an entirely charming book about family, fitting in, and friendship. It only gets funnier, more improbable, and more interesting as it goes along. Read it when you need to smile.
