Smoke and Shadows by Tanya Huff
Sep. 24th, 2008 12:35 pmThis book is touted as "the long-awaited continuation to the popular Henry Fitzroy series." The big problem with this statement is that the series in question was about Vicki Nelson, not Henry Fitzroy - he was just one of her love interests, and she is not in the new series. But I understand why it would be spun that way, especially with the recent TV show Blood Ties, which was unfortunately cancelled.
Remember Tony Foster? Henry's on-the-side rent boy, scrappy street urchin that sadly never made it onto the TV series, since then they'd have to admit Henry was bi? Well, perhaps in retribution, Tony the character now has his own career in television, ha ha! He is the assistant producer for - you guessed it - a low-budget show featuring a vampire detective. He longs for a meaningful relationship, but still isn't quite over Henry, though they're exes now. But everything will be called into question when a young actress suddenly drops dead on the set. Why can Tony see something happening that no one else can see?
This book is entertaining, though I wouldn't call it Huff's best. There were too many studio in-jokes, and I know very little about TV production. Still, three stars.
