Skin Tight by Carl Hiaasen
Aug. 26th, 2008 02:03 pmIf you don't know Hiaasen's work, he writes very funny mysteries set in Florida. He also wrote Hoot, a children's book that was made into a movie a few years ago. I was first turned on to his genius by
zzbottom. To date, my favorite work is Skinny Dip.
Skin Tight follows retired state investigator Mick Stranahan, an egotistical TV reporter, a career criminal who was the victim of a freak cosmetic surgery accident, and a doctor who has evaded malpractice charges many times through knowing what palms to grease. Everyone has a weak spot. Everyone has a secret - or more than one. And everyone loves someone - even if it's just himself.
These books are true enough to be funny. They will make you laugh out loud, a lot. This one was no exception. I also enjoyed that the plot was not predominantly focused on environmental issues - I love that theme in his work but it was nice to see some variety. Three stars. Read it after losing your job, or any other time you want to smile at human nature. I am planning to keep on reading Hiaasen until I just plain run out.
