This series is one of Putney's better-known, as I understand it. I wanted to try it after reading The Marriage Spell, which I enjoyed intensely.
Clare Morgan will do anything to save the struggling town she loves - even approach the lord, who is surrounded by dark rumors. When she begs for his help, he is unmoved. But he is willing to strike a bargain with her. If she will live with him for three months, letting her reputation languish, he will fulfill his obligations to the surrounding countryside. He's determined to ruin her. She's determined not to be moved by his dark charisma. But neither of them expected the feelings they would have for each other.
Alas, I feel this is but a shadow compared to the glory of the other. Many plot elements seemed similar - a devil's bargain between two eligible people who are outwardly very different in rank, one of whom has secrets and hidden traumas. The love of the innocent maiden unlocks the heart of the cold nobleman. These themes are the same. I missed the magic, though, and found the characters less likeable in the other book. Three stars.
