I saw Sex Positive, a documentary on the life of AIDS activist and kinky hustler Richard Berkowitz, as part of the Independent Film Festival last weekend. My favorite quote:

"I don't think now that promiscuity is as liberating as I found it to be when I was engaging in it." Yeah, you pretty much have to DO things for them to work. I know it wasn't what he meant but it made sense to me, and I found it pleasing and I laughed soundlessly for at least a minute.

The movie was quite good. If you practice safe sex, if you've ever wondered about how the concept was created, or if you're curious about what the the gay community was like in the 80s and 90s, you should definitely watch it.

Interestingly, Deception, the "erotic thriller" that [livejournal.com profile] mrpet and I saw last night was actually more depressing than the documentary that ended with tons of people dead and the main character sick, alone, and broke. As one review commented, if you want a movie that will really keep you guessing with unexpected plot turns, you shouldn't start out with the name Deception. It sets up all the viewers to watch for clues about what's coming next. It was kind of like The Spanish Prisoner, only with more sex and violence (but a lot less Steve Martin, which you may think is a good thing or a bad thing). I wish I could recommend it, but it's true what they say - it would have been better as a drama than a thriller - the beginning of the movie, and seeing how people interact in a hidden sexual subculture, was the best part, as far as I'm concerned. Although Hugh Jackman was evil in that movie in a way I didn't know he could be, which was pleasing.

Recently, in terms of TV watching, I have been watching the series Bones, about forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan, loosely based on the book series by Kathy Reichs, who is a coroner herself. V. cool. The show is funny without being annoying, and I love the two leads.

I have also gotten back into watching Numb3rs. I enjoy the guy quality of the show - the relationship between the two brothers is really interesting to watch. Those are also fun, light watches.

I was a bit disappointed by the premiere of Stargate: Atlantis. I have been watching Stargate: SG1 slowly but steadily for several years since [livejournal.com profile] rednikki first got me hooked. I am now up to Season 8, which is where Atlantis split off. I really enjoyed it up to a certain point, and then the lead flies through the Stargate to the address of their base, so that the evil lifesucking aliens know exactly where he came from. I found that incredibly stupid. Why not go to a different address that you know, lose them, and then head back to base? It annoyed me so much I almost stopped watching, but I think I'll give it a few more episodes. I know, I know, I'm picky.

Still working my way through Babylon 5 sequentially. I'm nearing the end of Season Three. Gods, I love that show.

Also, the new Animal Planet show Petfinder is really fun.

The end.
