My three newest Brazilian CDs are big hits - with me, that is.

I know how most of you are probably starting to feel about this topic, so...

I didn't like Bebel Gilberto's self-titled album the first few times I listened to it. It was different in a way that was hard to define (other than some of the songs being in English, which doesn't bother me with The New Bossa Nova, which is entirely in English). But it's really grown on me in the past few days and now I find it quite pleasing.

Bossa Nova Brasil is a CD of more traditional bossa nova, all released on Verve, mostly in the 60s and 70s if I understand correctly. This CD has almost no overlap with what I had been listening to so far, which is kind of awesome. My favorite new artist on there is the Tamba Trio.

Brazil Chill Sessions I actually bought, instead of just picking it up on swapacd.com. Astonishing, I know - I actually spent money on a CD! It's a CD of Brazilian bossa nova remixed to downtempo. When I saw the description and listened to the sample tracks, I knew I had to have it. Delicious. Very much like the Brazilian Lounge CD that started this whole journey.

There have been some Brazilian CDs that I've ordered and not liked. It's true. But, so far I've been lucky in that most of them have been from the library. NuLatin Lounge is a good example of this. It doesn't sound like bossa nova - it sounds like ambient Muzak, which is not a pretty picture. Also, for those who may have wondered, Windham Hill and Brazilian music are NOT two great tastes that go better together.

In other music news, the CD of duets between Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald is just as good as I remembered. This makes it my third copy. Where do my CDs go, anyway? I wish I knew.
