two unusual fantasies
Feb. 19th, 2008 08:28 amOver the long weekend I finished two books - Snake Agent by Liz Williams and Poison by Chris Wooding.
Snake Agent was a positively fascinating book. Inspector Chen is a police detective who specializes in dealing with supernatural problems and working as a liasion to Hell. In the modern age, your patron demon or deity is only an email or text message away, and the bioweb keeps information transfers smooth. But something strange is about to happen - and it all begins with the ghost of a virtuous young woman who never made it to Heaven. Truly unique and original. Not to be missed. Four stars.
Poison is a YA fantasy with a different twist. Poison is the name of a young girl growing up in a small swamp village. When her sister is replaced by a changeling, she will go to any lengths to get her back. She is helped by a host of unusual characters along the way, until she begins to find out disturbing things about the unfolding of her destiny. I loved the plot twists but I wish it had been half as long as it was - and it wasn't that long to begin with. Three stars.
