ETA: I should preface this by saying that I am NOT famous for listening to new music. I've had 90% of my CDs for at least ten years. Yeah, I know, it's kind of embarassing. But that's what makes me want to share this new development with you...

About six months ago, I was in a used CD store with [livejournal.com profile] mrpet. (As you might imagine, this happens a lot, since he's a DJ.) What was unusual about this time is that I found more CDs that I wanted than he did. The best of these turned out to be the Brazilian Lounge compilation from Putumayo. Why did I pick it up? I don't know. Something about the album cover attracted me strongly. One listen and I was in lurrv. More than that, I wanted more! I started requesting Brazilian music from the library.

This is my new favorite kind of music. So far, here are my favorite albums in the genre...

Brazilian Lounge by Putumayo - the one that started it all, very mellow and relaxing, with an ambient feel.

The New Bossa Nova by Luciana Souza - the source of the icon. It's very accessible - Souza is covering popular English songs in a bossa nova style. Her voice is so smooth and haunting. If you've never listened to bossa nova before, this is a good one to try first.

The Now Sound of Brazil by Ziriguiboom - another gorgeous compilation, this one by the Brazilian imprint of Six Degrees is on the upbeat side.

Pure Brazil: The Girls from Impanema from Planet Rhythm- a third compilation, this one is more traditional bossa nova with all female vocalists including a gorgeous track by Astrud Gilberto. I can't wait to try out other albums from this series.
