This was a recommendation from [livejournal.com profile] omnia_mutantur. The book is set in an alternate history version of Renaissance England (or so they say - I don't read enough in this time period to find it especially familiar). I have loved Melissa Scott for a long time, but somehow I had never come across this series she wrote with her late partner. I felt the beginning of the book was a bit slow, but I found it more and more engrossing as I continued. The book alternates between two male characters, one of whom is a decomissioned soldier, the other of whom is a police officer. The book is a mystery with fantastical elements. Astrology is a critical part of life in this country, and the stars you are born under determine your career and many other things. Now that's an unusual premise!

I give this book four stars - I enjoyed it enough to read it again happily. I am also planning to read the other book that is set in the same universe - Point of Dreams.

You're reminding me that I need to read some of Melissa's books; she's in one of my knitting communities and I've delighted in hanging out with her but never have gotten to her books. What would you recommend as a first and second book of hers for me to read?

i love it love it love it :)

armor of light is not in the same universe but is worth reading. point of dreams is wonderful, though perhaps not quite as strong as point of hopes. i wish she would come out with another one!

What a great situation, and great question! Thanks for asking. As a first read, I strongly recommend Trouble and Her Friends, which won the Lamda Award and got her famous(ish) and is also just a really amazing book. As a second read, I'd actually go with this one, Point of Hopes, because it's so different from her other works.

Ah, okay, I was misinformed by my sources. I will amend the post accordingly.

I suspect that the reason there are not more in this series is that her partner, with whom she co-wrote the book, passed away.
