This was a recommendation from
omnia_mutantur. The book is set in an alternate history version of Renaissance England (or so they say - I don't read enough in this time period to find it especially familiar). I have loved Melissa Scott for a long time, but somehow I had never come across this series she wrote with her late partner. I felt the beginning of the book was a bit slow, but I found it more and more engrossing as I continued. The book alternates between two male characters, one of whom is a decomissioned soldier, the other of whom is a police officer. The book is a mystery with fantastical elements. Astrology is a critical part of life in this country, and the stars you are born under determine your career and many other things. Now that's an unusual premise!
I give this book four stars - I enjoyed it enough to read it again happily. I am also planning to read the other book that is set in the same universe - Point of Dreams.
