recent movie reviews
Nov. 26th, 2007 10:29 amRecently I watched American Gangster with
mrpet, Enchanted with
7j, and Darjeeling Limited with someone else who doesn't, AFAIK, have a livejournal account.
I was explaining over Thanksgiving Dinner that I'm easy to please where movies are concerned. I will say "yes" to the possibility of seeing most movies, as long as I don't think they'll be upsetting. And my tastes are not very refined. Yes, I can tell an awesome movie from one that's only okay (at least according to me, right?) but there are many movies that others will think are terrible that I think are fine. I think it's partly that since I don't involve myself in the nitty-gritty of movies the way I do with books, and because I watch many fewer movies than I read books, it makes me somewhat uncritical. For these reasons, I review many more books than movies in this journal.
However, I liked all of these movies, for different reasons, so I thought I'd tell you all what I liked about Andthem.
American Gangster - Russell Crowe and Danzel Washington. Seriously, people. I hope they'll make many more movies together, because they were both awesome, and they were awesome together. In general, this movie was cast and acted amazingly well, and it would be worth seeing just for that, even if it didn't have anything else good about it. But it did have other good things about it. Anyway, I recommend it, and that's why.
Enchanted - Disney spoofs itself. The cliches that many of us remember from our childhood come under fire in a big way. An example - so you have the power to sing out and magically call the woodland creatures to come and help you with the housework. What happens if you use that power somewhere where the creatures are not so cute and cuddly, like New York City? The main character's naivete came off as refreshing rather than annoying. The costuming was great. The casting was great. But overall, what makes this movie wonderful is how seriously it DOESN'T take itself.
The Darjeeling Limited - Putting the "fun" back in "dysfunctional." Ever been privy to one of THOSE family reunions? Then you'll enjoy this movie. It also has a delightfully surreal quality, and fun cinematography. And the soundtrack is one I can promise you you'll never forget. (In a good way, you want to know? Don't ask that.)

Date: 2007-11-26 03:48 pm (UTC)I'm particularly glad to hear American Gangster came out well, as I find that both actors have a potential for overkill, and was nervous that the two of them together would be too over the top...
