Sweet and Deadly was Charlaine Harris' first mystery. It doesn't have vampires or ghosts, it's just a mystery taking place in a small Southern town. I'd like to point out, here, that even as the author's first, it still beat the hell out of that Mrs. Murphy book I read a little while back. It was engrossing, fun, and fast to read. I give it three stars. Enjoying it, along with her first Harper Connelly book Grave Sight, is making me wonder if I should give her Southern vampire series another try. I just didn't really like the first book that much. Do they get better?

Finder in general was recommended by the author of the Devil's Panties, on her website. Finder: King of the Cats was the only Finder book available through the Minuteman system. It was okay but it didn't make me feel like I must rush out and read all of them, ALL! Two stars.

Currently reading: Spook Country, Introducing Quantum Physics, and Meeting the Shadow.

The first Sookie Stackhouse novel I read made me think that Harris was trying to ride Laurell K. Hamilton's coattails. But the more of her books I read, the more I realized that she has her own universe, and I now look forward to the newest adventures of Sookie. (Goddess help anybody with such a name, though I guess it's not that big of a drawback in the South, where Things Are Different. :-) )

Well, it's not the universe that I really get excited about with this genre. What I like for dark fantasy romance (if you want to call it that) is humor, plot consistency, and main characters that aren't ditzes. Do you think the later books have those?

I think you might really enjoy *Finder: Mystery Date*:

Also, I definitely recommend reading them starting with volume 1, if you can - there are recurring characters who are fleshed out more along the way. I think you could read *Mystery Date* on its own, though. *Talisman* is also another lovely one, but it builds on characters introduced in previous volumes.
