This book is another book in the King's Blade series, as was The Gilded Chain, which I posted about a little while back. Unfortunately, I didn't like it as well as the first book. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either. The Firelands society that was the focus of the book was believable - probably the best thing about it. However, I really disliked the way the male characters broke down and humiliated the female characters. Maybe that was to show that they weren't nice guys? I couldn't quite tell. Still, it was a little depressing. Or something. The author wrote that while this book, the first book, and the third book are all stand-alones, reading any two of them will show inconsistencies that will only be resolved by reading whichever one you didn't read. I suppose I'll wind up reading book three. But not for a while - reading really good fantasy makes you not want to read fantasy that's only so-so. At least, it has that effect on me.

Next up in fantasy reads for me: The Naming, Legacy, and The Ladies of Grace Adieu.

i just read the 4th temeraire book, having seen you post about it here. what's up with that ending?!?!?

Well, if you consider that Novik is planning to write a fifth book, then you can consider what would have to happen with the plot in order for that to happen, and I think that brings some possibilities to mind. Sorry for the cryptic, I just don't want to spoil it for anybody. But I think I see where she's going with this.
