in praise of mellow adult cats

Mmmm, kittylove.
Our cats already know how to use the litterbox. They already know what No means, and they already know what it means if you pat your lap or the space next to you on the couch.
If they don't have enough food or water, or the above-mentioned litterbox needs to be emptied, they come to me and meow. But they aren't squawkers, and they don't do this randomly.
They are especially friendly and loving to us, but they are friendly to everyone who comes into the house. They don't mind strangers petting them, and they haven't scratched or bitten anybody. Not even the cableguy, who smelled like dog and didn't really know how to pet them.
My cat Charlie follows me around the house. He just wants to know what I'm doing, and to be in my company. He will happily lie in your lap (or on your chest) for hours while you pet him. Pretzel is more independent but will totally hang out with you if you engage him. His interesting peculiarity is that he only likes dry cat food - he's totally uninterested in kitty treats, dried shrimp, lamb, etc.
If we are out of the house, they take naps on things rather than getting into trouble.
They don't try to jump up on things in the kitchen, or climb inside cabinets or drawers.
They are at peace with being indoor cats. They like looking out the window at the outside world, but aren't interested in trying to get there.
Our cats rock.
