several books
Aug. 7th, 2007 07:26 pmI've been unwell recently, in a way that makes me want to read lots of books that don't require a lot of brainpower, and does not especially make me want to use the computer for long periods of time. So, these reviews have been delayed, and they'll be short.
Territory by Emma Bull ****
Y: The Last Man: Cycles ***
Curse the Dark by Laura Anne Gilman **
Revolt in 2100 by Robert A Heinlein ****
Methusaleh's Children by Robert A Heinlein ****r
Saber and Shadow by SM Sterling and Shirley Meier ****
The Cage by SM Sterling and Shirley Meier ***
Territory is the first new novel by Emma Bull in quite-a-while, her long-threatened fantasy Western. I really enjoyed it, although not in the "OMG SO GOOD I MUST REREAD THIS BOOK IMMEDIATELY AND THEN EAT IT" way that I've enjoyed some of her other books.
Volume Two of Y was satisfying, but not outstanding.
Curse the Dark didn't really do it for me. I love urban fantasy, but when it gets bogged down in complex but not terribly believable conspiracy stuff, I stop having fun. I think I'll drop this series.
Revolt in 2100 was my new Heinlein of the year. I couldn't believe how much I enjoyed it! My last two new Heinleins, Number of the Beast and, er, that one that takes place on Luna with the talking computer, were not as satisfying. This one made me want to re-read lots of Heinlein, which is cool.
Methusaleh's Children was in the same volume, and it had been ten years, so I read that too.
Saber and Shadow is the rewrite of The Sharpest Edge, which I wrote about a few months ago. I liked the rewrite better. This led me to move straight into The Cage, which is the sequel. (There's one more sequel and two prequels. I read one of the prequels in college, at a time when I would have enjoyed Saber and Shadow much more, I think.) I did not enjoy the sequel as much, although I did like it.
