I feel like the "how far is too far" question is seriously lacking description of motivation. How far would I walk when I had no reason I couldn't ride my motorcycle instead? How far would I walk because I was stranded nowhere and nobody had any idea where I was and I didn't have a personal locator beacon, before I gave up and died of starvation?
Also, I usually put my weight on my heels first, except when I'm running barefoot I land on the balls of my feet.
To me, walking is a very utilitarian thing, and not at all recreational. I never choose to "go for a walk". I walk merely to go from point A to point B.
I also differentiate between walking and hiking. Hiking is about exploration, in my mind, and it takes place in the woods with stops and detours to check out things. I walk with my head down, figuratively, but hike with my head up and scanning around.
Barefoot, I most often put the balls of my feet down first. I have to make an effort to remember to put the heel down first. In shoes or boots, not in a house, heel first. When hiking in the woods, I prefer boots. I don't like sand in sandals, so on the beach I'm barefoot. I'd much rather walk on hard packed earth than slippery hot slidy sand.
Once I walked home from grad school (the first time; ~30 min?), because the wait for the bus was so long, I walked incrementally to each next bus-stop, then looked back to see if a bus was coming. Sadly, it caught up to me only one or two stops from home, so I just finished walking.
I've walked around various parts of NYC, usually on my way home from somewhere. Oh, heck, I walked around Amsterdam! That was fantastic. I saw many fun shops and interesting art, all on the way to an art museum.
