On Tuesday I am meeting with a holistic health person. She specializes in dealing with food allergies.

I have never done this before. I didn't even know that you could treat food allergies this way. Has anyone who reads this journal had experiences with this? What questions should I ask to make sure that I'm getting someone who is good at what they do? Does anybody on this list HAVE a holistic practitioner that they work with and love?

I tried looking at the website of her school, which she gave me. It was a little cultlike. But that doesn't necessarily mean that she is. I asked their "live chat operators" what questions I should ask, and they basically said, "She'll be asking all the questions, she'll work with you to create a plan that really works for you personally!" which didn't tell me anything useful.

I know people who have had some success treating allergies with homeopathy, for whatever that's worth, but I dunno about "holistic" approaches. I hope it works for you, and let us know how the visit goes.

I did a little work with NAET, which I'm sure is powerful and probably can be effective (it made me sick, which is usually the sign of something that *could* work, but isn't working for me.)

I hope your meeting goes well! I've had some success with alternative therapies for a menstrual disorder and for pain management. In both cases, I concluded that they could supplement the effects of traditional medicine, but were insufficient as substitutes for me. Essentially, most nutritional and exercise/breathing recommendations were effective, energy work seemed to work once but never worked again, and aromatherapy was great for improving mood but didn't do much else. I haven't gotten around to doing acupuncture/pressure, but a friend with inexplicable hives was very happy with the results of acupuncture.

I get my primary and allergy care at the Marino Center, and they seem to have a fairly holistic approach to allergies.

There is an awesome naturopath in my building called Oceana Rames who is extremely holistic, but I don't know the scope or practices of someone who is a holistic practitioner

"holistic health" is incredibly general-- is this person a naturopath?

that live chat sounds so lame! i don't have any specific folks to refer you to in your area, but i do know that the acupuncture school in watertown is a good one, with a clinic where you could see a teacher (along w students being trained.)
