Yesterday was a crazy day for me. Due to short trip planning and then sickness, I didn't really start packing until a few hours before we had planned to leave for the airport. I had [livejournal.com profile] mrpet bring my suitcase up from the basement, and I threw some things in. (The packing strategy of "Pack the warmest thing you'll need, pack the coolest thing you'll need, pack stuff for any special event" I originally learned here has really served me well.) I also included two knitting projects (one that hasn't been started yet, one that is nearly finished) and four or five books. Books represent security to me when I travel. Never again do I want to get trapped in a closed airport for multiple hours with only Gods and Myths of Northern Europe to read. So far, I know that I forgot a book of puzzles, my "extra bag" (a large nylon tote that folds up into a tiny pouch, which I carry with me when I travel in case I shop a lot or need somewhere to put my dirty laundry), and my bathing suit, but I'll live.

We took the Silver Line to get to the airport. We left the house a bit late, so we didn't have a lot of time to eat before our plane took off. We got sandwiches at a place called Green Leaf Cafe, which were actually quite good. We had two relatively uneventful flights, with a layover in DC, and arrived in Atlanta around midnight. Now, I prefer nonstop flights where possible. But where they are not possible, my favorite layover length is just over an hour. It's long enough to use a non-floating restroom, to get something to eat, to stretch or sit down for a minute, to get something you forgot at one of those super-expensive airport boutiques. And then, just when your immediate needs have been taken care of and you think, "Okay, what should I do now?" your flight starts boarding. Lovely. Anyhow, we got a shuttle to the rental car place, picked up the rental car, tried to drive to the hotel, got lost, called the hotel twice for more directions, found the hotel, got our room, parked the car, took the luggage up, and went to bed. By that time it was around 1:30, so I wound up sleeping in, which I don't usually.

I remembered how polite most people are in Atlanta and how pleasant the weather is. I had forgotten, however, about how good the orange juice is and how sweet the air smells. The last time I was here, I didn't think it would be ten years before I was here again. I'm glad to be back.
