fluffy and lead-filled

I read Sorceress of Faith by Robin Owens in about a day. Light, fluffy, kinda sweet. I don't normally start with the second book in a series, but the first one looked too "fuzzy" for me. And the second one was "fuzzy" enough, so I'm glad I started with number two. Three stars - it was okay, funny in places, not great.
On the other hand, we have The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell. I'm very, very glad that
7j warned me in advance about some of the most horrific elements of the book. I think that the book would have disturbed me beyond what I could live with if it hadn't been for that. But, since I knew what was coming, I was able to accept it for more of what it was, I think. I found the book difficult, upsetting, slow, but really, really amazing. Extremely thoughtful, and touching. It's worth the work! I'd strongly recommend it to trauma survivors and spiritual people, as long as you have strong stomachs or at least read it, as I did, in small doses. Four stars. I'd give it five, except that I don't feel I actually enjoyed it per se. My feelings were much more complicated than that. I was tempted to immediately request the sequel from the library, but I don't think that's a good idea. Instead, I'm planning to spend the rest of my evening knitting something soothing and watching Growing Up Adorable Baby Animal on television.*
I am also getting close to the end of A Place of my Own, by Michael Pollan, which I have been enjoying for a number of months, now. It makes me want to read all these other books about houses, which slows the process. I'm also curious about reading Second Nature, since I like the writing style, and I like gardens, and I have a black thumb.
*Animal Planet has this show, Growing Up. It replaced That's My Baby! in the cute baby animal show category. I've watched Growing Up Walrus, Growing Up Camel, Growing Up Sitka Deer, etc. Very adorable.
