This week I finished a suggestion of [livejournal.com profile] chienne_folle, Don't Shoot the Dog! by Karen Pryor. This is an in-depth study of positive reinforcement behavioral training, and how to use it to improve YOUR life. Wow. I want to have this book so I can refer to it all the time. Five stars, even though I was reading the first edition - I'd love to see what the new edition is like. This is what I wanted and didn't get from all of those management books. I recommend it to everyone.

A brand-new book that was a recommendation on the booksense website is Silent in the Grave, the first novel by Deanna Raybourn. This is another Victorian mystery. If you liked Kate Ross, you'll like this, too - it's longer and a bit lighter than her work. Yes, there are new gowns, yes, there is tea and charity work - but the seamy underside of London is definitely in evidence. Everyone has a secret - the widow Julia Gray is simply trying to determine which secret might have caused the death of her husband. These revealed secrets also cause her to view those around her in entirely new ways. This book is much easier (and faster) to read than The Glass Books of the Dream-Eaters - I suspect it won't stay with me as long as that one, but I also suspect I'm more likely to read a sequel to this.

Then, for comfort food, and because it had just arrived for me, I re-read Svaha by Charles de Lint, a book I'm quite fond of. Currently, I am working on Michael Pollan's A Place of My Own, as well as reading I [Heart] Female Orgasm to edit it. I also picked up will Hit Parade and The Emperor's Children at the library, and will need to read them quickly - since they're new, they're seven-day books. I have my work cut out for me!
