internet dating - tangent, no focus here

I'm not sure if "modern love" in your question is a term I don't know or a general question about love in modern times.

As for internet dating, I think I'd be more ok with it for myself if I had not the history I have.

In HS my best friend dated men on the internet. She would blow off plans with me to hang out at the computer and chat with them. She would tell me stories and such about these men. It creeped me out, she was 16 they were over 30. They sent her videos, played games with her emothions, and generally the whole thing was bad. She and I even had discussion about how cybersex and physcial were different(I was 16 too). The end result for me was a complete distrust of anyone I did not know/had not at least met once in real life on the internet.

I know now that she had very low self esteem and hang ups about her weight. Out of a fear no one would want to date her she hid on the internet. But I was 16 and rather focused on my own issues. Which I feel no guilt over, since she never noticed I was anorexic.

I'm getting better, but I still shy away from people I don't know or at least met through someone else.

It's the name of a song, most recently sung by David Bowie:

I like having cute subjects to my posts on occaision.

I mean, I met Nick online, and a year later went to see him in Scotland, and we're still very close, what, 4 years later?
But my favorite was sort of odd- I met one guy through a craigslist ad, but we didn't click. However, he hooked me up with his friend over email... who was totally my type. They were in a scial group I never would've met if it hadn't been for the 'net forcing me to look beyond who their friends were and how they dressed, into more important things like how their brains worked and how articulate they were.

i have profiles, and i have chatted with a few people (really, under 5 total), but it's never gone anywhere for various reasons. and really, i'm not *trying* or even particularly receptive; if there's someone super awesome seeming and hot that comes along i very rarely give them a chance. otherwise, i can't be bothered.

What's "modern love"? Is that different from the kind of loving we old fogies do?

It's actually a song title. I occaisionally feel inspired to put cute subjects on my posts. I have to admit, I expected more people on my Flist to be Bowie fans...
