Our beloved Highness, Miss Kitty Suzuki Yao, was taken to the vet two days ago. I had noticed something on one of her paws that concerned me. It looked like it might be a fungal infection - the pad was discolored and cracked.

With a minimum of trauma, we put the princess in a carrier. mrpet transported her. The vet said he didn't know what was wrong with the pad, but that she had a broken claw. This is the extra-extra claw she has, which she has not had any muscle control over while she's been living with us. She has extra thumbs, with their own claws, which she can control. However, this other extra claw doesn't retract, she can't move it, and it's not in line with the rest of her claws. The angle is off, and it gets in the way. The vet said it should come off, and did surgery the next day.

She is now back home, apparently none the worse for wear. She is favoring her paw less than she did before we took her in, so I guess that means it was the right call. I had been thinking for a while that it might make her life easier, actually. It used to snag on things, and she couldn't get it unhooked, because it was going in a different direction from the rest. It also frequently looked irritated, like it might be infected and/or painful.

The vet wants us to force-feed her antibiotics. Hah, I say. I put some GSE in her water, but that kitty doesn't get force-fed. Good luck to those who might try. He also said we could take off her bandage in a few days. She took it off herself in a few hours. Independent kitty!

*nodnod* i had a cat who had a similar thing, though we didn't take it off until we had another reason to put her under.

The vet had said the first time he noticed it that he would leave it there unless there was a problem. The discoloration of the claw and her favoring that paw seemed to indicate one.
