So. If I wanted to customize the words used for commenting on my journal, and stuff like that, how would I do that? Like the way some people's journals say things like, "5 oinks, Squeal!" for their comment links? More generally - is it hard to customize journal styles? I like the notebook style [livejournal.com profile] roozle uses, for example, but not the color that comes as standard.

Also. I know someone on my friends list asked about this recently, but I can't find it. What are the advantages to using an lj client rather than the web version? Do most of you use clients, and if so, which ones?

hee, i am an example!

how easy it is to customize depends on what style you use and how complex you want to make it. i know, that's a cop out. under Your Settings there should be links to Modify Journal and Edit Style. those would be where to start playing around.

"Your Settings"? I don't see that anywhere in my blue menu. Can you give me a pointer to that?

basically what deravyn said. my menu is different, as i am using an older style. under Manage there are customization and style links. i'm going to assume that style will let you choose things like roozle's notebook style (and futz with the color scheme) and customizations will let you change wording and such.

The path that you are looking for is...

Blue menue - manage - customize - edit customizations button on the page

That will give you the option to change the words used to enter your comments pages.

Let me know if you need any other help with this.

Ok, I think was made an assumption that I want to make sure doesn't confuse you. On the blue menu you go to manage and then customize. From there what you do next depends on what style system you are using. There is an old style system (S1) and a new style system (S2) I have found S2 to be a lot more user friendly in making changes and options. It is under the S2 system that the path I mentioned works.

Hope that clears up the assumption I made.

Also, customizing your style in S2 is fairly easy. You pick a layout and then a theme for the layout and then you can customize the settings to your heart's content. You get many more customization option if you are a paid member (which I think you are) but you have to go into changing the actual html of your page layout.

I am in S2 with the Notepad layout. But it doesn't seem to have any theme choices.

Is there some way to grab the code and revise it? I'm assuming this is HTML-based...

Since I don't have a paid account I haven't tried actually editing the html so I can't offer any pointers or advice on where to begin with that.

Sorry

hmmm. it lets you change the background color. but apparently that's not the notebook page... any ideas?

I just looked at the style you are talking about and it does not appear that it will let you easily change the notebook page color. That is because the page color is actually an image. There are 2(that I saw) background images in that style that make up the notebook page, 1 for the spiral binding with a little bit of page and another for the page itself.

What you would have to do (I don't have a paid account to try it out or be sure) would be to save the images that the style uses to your computer, edit them to change the page color to what you want and then upload them somewhere accessible. After that you would have to edit the html for that style to point to your new images for the background.

I think it may be time to ask my pet for help. Thanks for your suggestions. :)

I think I have a handle on what is needed. I'm also planning on messing around with styles.
