Behind the cut, find reviews of New Moon and The Reunion.

The theme of these two books, in my opinion, is "love and its challenges."

New Moon is the sequel to Twilight by Stephanie Meyer. The second book, like the first, deals with a teenage girl's devotion to a dark, mysterious boy who happens to be a vampire. I loved the way that this book dealt with themes like, "I really love this person but my family and friends just don't get it," "This person really loves me, but isn't sure the relationship is in my best interests," and "Should you get involved with someone even if they're not going to be the great love of your life?"
I liked, also, that this book was not overly concerned with the physical. She craves the touch of her beloved, she craves seeing him, but not in a particularly sexual way - she just really wants to be with him. To me, that felt like an accurate portrayal of what love is like. I give it four stars.

The Reunion is the fifth book in Laura Antoniou's popular Marketplace series. Something that I really love about this series is how practical it is. Yes, it's all about a secret underground community of slaves and slave-owners. But with each book, a new and serious topic is revealed. Such as, "What happens when you try to live 'happily ever after' in suburbia? What, if anything, do you tell your kids? What happens if you fall in love while you're a slave? What if your owner is a masochist?" That, I felt, was the real meat of the book - not the other plot about a sleazy journalist trying to write a piece on the Marketplace. It was sexy, though perhaps not quite as sexy as some of the other books. Still a series to watch. Three stars.
