This book, naturally, is a follow-on to the immensely popular Kushiel series. I thought it was well-written. It didn't have as much delightful kinky sex as the earlier books set in this world.
I really liked that Carey has chosen to focus this book (and its hopeful sequels) on a male top character, since the first books addressed a female masochist. Even though I was sad there was not more kinky sex, I think it was really appropriate to the character and his struggles. I thought that she portrayed very well the inner conflict that many tops face, ie, "Am I a terrible person for wanting to do these sorts of things?"
The ideas of trauma and healing were also discussed very compassionately.
I'm looking forward to the sequels. Four stars for book 95.

I can't wait til the next one.
