"fan," from "fanatic"
Apr. 22nd, 2006 11:35 pmI am part of a small club.
Out of more than 10,000,000 users of LJ, only ten have listed the interest "Bill Staines."
There have never been any Bill Staines T-shirts or bumper stickers, as far as I am aware.
Many people who like folk music have never heard of him.
However, I was raised on this folk musician since I was a wee little anemone. And when it comes to music, I fear change. I like the oldies but goodies, and Bill Staines is that for me.
Tonight,
mrpet was kind enough to accompany me to a concert he gave to a small, yet dedicated group of fans at the Museum of Transportation in Brookline.
The acoustics were bad. The building was really cold - what can you expect from a converted barn? But, I enjoyed it more than almost any other concert of his I've been to, and there have been many. What did I like about it? Well, he seemed to sense that everyone there was a "lifer." He didn't just stick to his best-known tunes. He played things that were old and obscure and wonderful. Also, I got to request a song! And he played it for me. Secret Garden, from the album Bridges. It made me feel so happy. And he played two other songs I've never heard him sing in concert - "Two of a Kind," which he had covered on his out-of-print, never-converted-to-CD album Wild, Wild, Heart, and Bob Dylan's "Don't Think Twice."
He'll be in town again in September, at Passim. I plan to be there. This time, it would be fun to go with more friends, since it's being planned more than a few days in advance. Anyone interested? I will be happy to conv- I mean, introduce you to his music before then if you're interested. He's getting on in years - I don't know how much longer he'll be touring, so I want to get to enjoy him while I still can.
It's really cool to have sung so much that I have a sore throat. And, nice tranny-lady in the row in front of me said I had a really pretty voice, and that made my night. Oh! And my folk hero complimented me on my green man T-shirt. *happy wiggling* I knew a folk concert was one place where it would be appreciated!
