in times of trouble, read anthologies
Mar. 17th, 2006 07:56 amI read two anthologies this week - Young Warriors, edited by Tamora Pierce and Josepha Sherman, and Bite, the editorship of which was not clear. Both were good.
Young Warriors was a quality anthology. It took me a little while to get into it, but once I did, I was quite pleased. It's hard to pick favorites when many stories are good, but I did especially like "An Axe for Men" by Rosemary Edgehill, "Heartless" by Holly Black, and "Student of Ostriches" by Tamora Pierce. I hope we'll see this editing pair team up again. Four stars.
Bite, book 32 for the year, was not a quality anything, but I enjoyed it so much. The Hamilton and Harris stories were okay, but the works by lesser-known authors, MaryJanice Davidson in particular, were quite good. It's rare to find an erotic vampire story anthology that isn't pure drek, and I was pleased to come across this one. Three stars. (I'm unsure as to whether to pursue Davidson's work further - it seems that her main series, starting with Undead and Unwed, features my least favorite character in the short story. I suppose I'll give it a try anyhow.)
