reading books like climbing mountains
Feb. 28th, 2006 04:30 pmI spent almost the whole day today reading, and it felt great!
I read Anne Bishop's new book Sebastien last week in about a day. I really liked it. I liked a lot of things about it - it was less violent and more playful than her other books, and it didn't go in the directions that I predicted based on her other books, and that was really cool. I won't be more specific, as I don't want to spoil it for anyone. I will look forward to the sequels, which I sense are forthcoming. Four stars.
Today, I swallowed Paladin of Souls by Lois McMaster Bujold in one gulp. I love her books. Whenever I start a new one, I think, "I won't read this one so quickly," but it never works out. I really like that this Chalion fantasy series is so different from her famous sci fi. Having read all of her Miles Vorkosigan books, I felt certain I knew what her fantasy would be like - light, witty, and full of high manners. I couldn't have been more wrong. It's dark and deep and thoughtful. This was the sequel to Curse of Chalion. I liked it almost as well. If you think that being god-touched could not possibly be as fun as most people seem to imagine, this is the series for you. Oh yeah. Three stars.
Finally - this almost deserves a post of its own - I have finished slogging through Best of the Best, edited by Gardner Dozois. I read one of his "Year's Best Science Fiction" a few years back and was disappointed in it. I thought that reading the anthology of anthologies would be a good way to make sure I wasn't missing anything. And I think it was - I had only read a few of the stories before, despite thinking of myself as being fairly well-versed in sci fi. Unfortunately, there were few stories in here that I liked, and nothing that I found to be intensely memorable. This may have been my 2006 book 24, but it felt like five or ten books worth. I doubt I'll read another anthology of this kind anytime soon. The fact that it was more than 600 pages long should have been a clue. Two and a half stars - there was nothing really wrong with it, but an ANTHOLOGY should always have some awesome stories in it.
Time to let go and do some knitting and TV watching, I do believe.
