owl triangulation
Feb. 23rd, 2006 09:17 amI've been thinking recently that it would be fun to go out some morning and see if I could get a better pinpoint on where our neighborhood owl is hanging out.
This morning I was feeling peppy, so when I heard him call, I put on some clothes and went outside.
I took the suggestion of owling.com, which was to try to triangulate based on his call. I have pretty good hearing. So, first I stood in my own backyard. He didn't call for a few more minutes. I closed my eyes and concentrated. I was thinking about something else by the time I heard him call. I was pointed in the right direction - behind the house.
I then walked over to the next street, Milton, to see if I could hear him. I tried a few different places. As far as I can tell, he is right behind 18 Milton Street. I went up the driveway but didn't feel comfortable walking into the (fenced-in) yard.
There are some big yards back there, which explains a fair amount. I wouldn't choose MY yard to live in, if I were a woodland creature.
I wish I knew how to find out who lives there. I'd like to send them a letter, saying, "Hey, I think you have a long-eared owl in your backyard, do you mind if I come over and check it out?" I tried a reverse address lookup, but it didn't bring anything up. I'd feel a little weird just knocking on their door.
Again, I wish this house was ours, and we could do stuff to the yard to make it more hospitable for the owl. It's nice to know there's one around.
