snugglekitty: (knitting)

Sorry, guys, no pics on this one. I can't find the plug-in for the camera memory stick, so I'm going to have to describe what I'm doing in words.

Since recent health problems have come up, I've felt unwilling to work on any knitted project that isn't for me. So, right now, I am working on a pair of cabled wristwarmers (charcoal gray with raspberry accents), and checkerboard socks, for meeee!

I also recently started a dialogue about exchanging prayer shawls in [livejournal.com profile] knitting and a new community, [livejournal.com profile] knitprayershawl has grown out of that discussion. So, I am exchanging prayer shawls with a lovely lady in MO. Basically, we are each making the other something warm and cozy to wrap in, and sending each other good wishes. It's a nice idea, I think, and I had it first! So yay. Anyway, I am using a really pretty blue and gray variegated yarn for hers, with accents of purple, green and navy. It's chunky yarn and I'll be working it on number 17 needles. I finished making a swatch for this project.

A swatch is kind of like a dress rehearsal for a knitting project. You knit a little piece of the pattern you're planning to make with the yarn and needles you want to use. This helps you to figure out some details about the pattern you're using, how you want the colors to go together, how many stitches you're going to get per inch, things like that. I've gotten into making swatches that are the same shape as the finished product will be. So, for instance, a little tube for something that's going to be a sock. A little rectangle or triangle for something that's going to be a shawl.
It's actually kind of fun. It's like making miniature versions of the project. It's great because doing a swatch often shows you things that you DON'T want to do in the pattern when you make it for real. Also, it's fast, and gives you a sense of accomplishment. Recently I've been doing two or three swatches per project, rather than what I used to do, which is knit half the project, decide I didn't like how it looked, and then start over. *grin* So, yeah. Swatching is great.

So today, I am planning to start the prayer shawl for real. No more swatching, but the actual real thing. I'm going to make it about 28 inches wide and stop when it seems like a good length to wrap yourself up in.

I think I will also be starting my wristwarmers for real.

Anyhow, I'll post pictures once I find the camera hookup.

Hooray for yarn! I recently picked up mine as well, and it's been making me feel great.
