No Flying in the House by Betty Brock
Apr. 21st, 2009 08:55 amTitle: No Flying in the House
Author: Betty Brock
Genre: Children's fantasy
Topical Arc: "Oh please cheer me up!"
Pages: 157
Copyright Date: 1970
Cover: An adorable little girl with short blond hair sits in a chair that's too big for her. She looks up adoringly (I reused that word root intentionally) at a tiny white dog sitting on the top of the chair.
First line: "One morning before breakfast Mrs. Vancourt stepped out on her terrace to look at the ocean."
Best part: The sweetness of some of the details.
Worst part: I don't want to give too much away, but I didn't like the ending. I will include a spoiling explanation behind the cut.
Grade: C+
Recommended for: Kids.
Related Reads: Half Magic by Edward Eager, The Book of Dragons by Edith Nesbit, The Thirteen Clocks by James Thurber, The Paper Bag Princess by Robert Munsche
( So, what bugged you about that ending, LadyA? )
This is a fun book, if you're willing to let the ending slide.
