literacy volunteering yay!
Jan. 26th, 2005 10:52 amSo, my attempts to do literacy volunteering are bearing fruit.
I have called various places and waited for callbacks. I finally got one, from Caroline at the Eastern Massachusetts Literacy Council. They have an orientation and training program, and if you are a volunteer you can borrow materials from them to help you do tutoring. You make your own schedule with the student you work with for one or two hours a week.
The next orientation is next Thursday night from six to nine PM in Medford. I won't be able to make that one because of my self-defense class, but she signed me up for the next one close-by, which is in Lexington in March. I'd rather not wait that long, but I can deal. That one will be on a Friday morning.
If anybody else is interested in signing up, their website is http://www.emlc.org/ and the phone number is 781-646-3335. Apparently most of their applicants for help are ESL folks.
