two movies

snugglekittyTuesday is two-for-one day at Hollywood Express. I hope it doesn't make me pathetic that I know that.
Anyway. I picked up the Lemony Snicket movie and House of Flying Daggers and watched them both yesterday.
There is no five- or fifteen-minute movie thing for HoFD, which I think is a crying shame. I think it would make a great one. However, in Googling to find this out, I discovered that most of the reviews said, "I loved this movie, except for the last fifteen minutes!" which was how I felt, too.
I expected it to have a happy ending. Or a wispy flying-down-the-side-of-the-mountain or we-both-go-back-to-our-respective-armies kind of ending.
The plot twist where Mei isn't actually blind and the guy's superior who is actually a mole is in love with her? That was pretty cool. But the way that they all kill each other at the end? Not really what I was expecting from "lyrical love story, lots of action." And the flying blood was... well, it was a little much. It reminded me of the school play in Addams Family.
I would have been much happier if they had ended it with him riding away and her watching. Or her starting to follow him. The death was a little gratuitous.
But other than that I liked it a lot.
