even more yarn whoredom
Dec. 16th, 2004 04:56 pmSo,
bryghtrose got me a gift certificate for a spinning class at Mind's Eye Yarn. I went this afternoon and it was really fun. It was easy. Also, if the yarn breaks (which is what I was really worried would happen) it doesn't even matter, because - duh! - the whole point is spinning fibers together. Much less stressful after I figured that out. Soon, I will be doing this thing from start to finish! Except I don't think that I actually want to raise my own sheep. And I'm not quite sure what I'm going to do with this brown wool yarn once I'm done... um... making it. Spells maybe?
I finished the beret. Here's the pattern I used - first saw it in a Searcher magazine article about knitting and crochet. I made it out of 610 Debbie Bliss cashmerino. The 610 is kind of a rich red. Very sophisticated. The pattern said you need about 4 oz of yarn. It took me just around three balls. Also, where the pattern says you should decrease until snug and then do the brim, they lie like dogs!! The single crochet for the brim makes the hole in the hat much smaller. I redid this about five times trying different techniques before I realized that each row of single crochet brim is equal to about two rows worth of decreasing. So you actually want to switch to that stitch when the hat is still loose.
When I had finished the pattern, I made a tuft to make it more beret-like, which was easy. I chained ten, folded it in half and stuck it through the hole in the top, and then wove in the ends.
I started making this pattern for
a hat for
starkeymonster. The yarn she picked is "mermaid green," silk and rayon. The hat is very pretty, but around row thirteen I realized that it would only fit on a head the size of my two fists together. Also, the X's and O's, which look adorable with yarn that's all one width, look very weird and messy and not that attractive with yarn that's varied in size. So I think I will try another pattern.
My next big project is going to be making a shawl for myself. Click the link and marvel at its beauty. You know you want to.
And now off to the library. Of course I need another book on knitting, what are you suggesting?
