The other night [livejournal.com profile] starkeymonster and I had [livejournal.com profile] 7j and boyfriend over for dinner, to return their gracious dinner hosting of a few weeks ago. Since I was making a special effort, I thought you might like to hear about the menu.

We began with fresh bread, cheese, and spreads. The bread was rustic Italian, the cheese was cheddar, and the spreads were pesto, pepper chutney, onion and tomato chutney, and artichoke pesto.

The second course was a layered portabella salad, based on one I had had at Sorriso for my birthday dinner. The portabellas had been sauteed with olive oil, then sprinkled with thyme salt. Slivers of sheep's milk cheese topped them. All this was covered in organic baby arugula and drizzled with garlic oil and balsamic vinegar.

This was following by a warm (but not hot) carrot-ginger soup with fresh thyme, sour cream, and red kale on top. The kale had been sauteed in oil, then chilled with sesame seeds and soy sauce.

For a main course, we enjoyed my famous curry pizza, in this case with lamb and apricot sausage, more portabellas, red peppers, cashews, and golden raisins.

Several hours passed before we were able to consume dessert - ice cream, berries, and whipped cream over cookies, engineered by [livejournal.com profile] starkeymonster.

If that doesn't get you hot, you're not a foodie.

It all sounds lovely, but I keep coming back to "artichoke pesto". What's in it?

Also, the pizza reminds me that I went to Za recently and had a pizza that had dried cherries on it (in addition to something savory and salty, like maybe goat cheese and caramelized onions?). The sweet-and-salty pizza was divine.

Ground-up artichoke hearts, primarily. Plus a bit of cheese, oil, and lemon juice. REALLY yummy. Great on sandwiches.
