Title: Pardonable Lies
Author: Jacqueline Winspear
Series: Maisie Dobbs #3
Genre: Historical mystery
Setting: England and France in the twenties.
Reason for Reading: I enjoy the main character and thought it would be fun to read a book set in England while I was in England.
Finished In: Days
Pages: 359, plus an interview with the author and a set of discussion questions.
Copyright Date: 2005
Cover: A woman in a cloche hat leans over the rail of a steam ship. Smoke is billowing from the smokestack behind her.
First line: "The young policewoman stood in the corner of the room."
Best part: The intertwining of the various plots of the book.
Worst part: One plotline concerning an orphaned child was tied up too quickly and neatly for my liking.
Imaginary Theme Song: Jeepers Creepers by Louis Armstrong
Grade: C+
Recommended for: Fans of the series, or those who are curious. It would make a good entree.
Related Reads: Maisie Dobbs by the same author, Murder on Astor Place by Victoria Thompson, The Beekeeper's Apprentice by Laurie R. King.

In Maisie Dobbs' third outing, she defends a young girl from a murder charge and tries to solve the mystery of what really happened to a downed pilot during the war. Her old loyalties and friendships will be tested to the limit as she seeks to discover if the truth is always the right answer.

I thought this book was better than the previous installment, Birds of a Feather, which is always a lovely sign. I liked that it was pretty long. It would make a good read for the beach or the plane.
