Title: King's Shield
Author: Sherwood Smith
Series: Inda, book 3 (same world as Crown Duel)
Genre: Fantasy
Reason for Reading: The first book was pretty good, and I had an unreasonable love for the second one.
Pages: 594
Copyright Date: 2008
Cover: Two guys in fancy dress look out over a battlement. One guy has a scar on his face and looks like rough trade. The other looks ruthless but fey. The fey one has a telescope.
First line: "After nine years of exile, Inda was going home."
Best part: I think Smith is doing a great job of eliminating enemies and threats while ensuring that you can see more on the horizon.
Worst part: It was hard seeing Evred, who I really liked in book 2, becoming a more fallible character. He doesn't quite join the "bad guys" column in this book, but I feel he's left the "good guys" list.
Imaginary Theme Song: LOTR theme song. This book has some epic battles in it.
Grade: C+
Recommended for: Those, like me, who cannot bear not continuing the series.
Related Reads: Inda, the first book, and Court Duel.

As for a plot summary - of the eight paragraphs on the book's cover that give the synopsis, the first six describe the events of the previous two books. With that being said, I will give my own three-sentence summary: "Inda comes home. Things get more complicated. People die."

I picked up this book feeling a little bit of dread. I knew in my heart that the chances of it being as good as or better than the previous installment, The Fox, were slim. Alas, in this I was correct. But it was still really good and I am looking forward to reading the final book in the series.
