Title: Dark Aura
Author: Diana O'Hehir
Series: Carla Day #3
Genre: Mystery
Pages: 273
Copyright Date: 2007
Cover: Lots of purple. A woman lies head down in a rocky stream. Her shirt is bright pink and she seems to be wearing tight blue jeans.
First line: "'She's going to die,' I say."
Best part: The setting and the circumstances were original.
Worst part: This may seem an odd complaint - but all of the characters called the elder of the story, Carla's father, "honey," "baby," and "sweetheart" all the time. She never calls him Dad and no one calls him by his name. See more behind the cut.
Imaginary Theme Song: "Do You Remember the Time?" by Michael Jackson
Grade: C+
Recommended for: People interested in a mystery series that's a bit different. Folks that do elder care.
Related Reads: The Memory Keeper's Daughter by Kim Edwards. (I don't have much in this category - recommendations about caregiver mysteries and those taking place in rural California? Anyone?)

Here's what I happen to know:
1) You should not call elders that you are taking care of by diminutives. You should call them by name. They do better healthwise and it's more respectful.
2) Pets are good for people with Alzheimer's.
3) PWA often experience "sundown syndrome" which means that they do much less well at night than during the day.
4) Reiki can help with sundown syndrome.
5) Exercise can cause improvements in PWA.

That's it, that's what I know. But I felt frustrated - a bit angry on the behalf of this smart older guy who is being treated like a little kid by those around him. Yes, I know it's complicated, and I know they want to help. But still.
